Das Center for Resear h in Wireless Mobility and Networking (CReWMaN) Department of Computer S ien e and Engineering University of Texas at Arlington Arlington, TX 76019 E-mail:f hat, dasg se.uta.edu Abstra t In this paper, we optimize the usage of both ontrol and traÆ hannels of a CDMA system by swit hing the MAC states of a servi e. In parti ular, we nd the optimal transition timers for a dma2000 system supporting integrated voi e and data traÆ . This is a hieved by optimizing a omposite performan e metri de ned as a multiobje tive fun tion of hannel utilization, waiting time and the saving in the signalling overhead. First, we try to hara terize wireless data as a mix of of Poisson-distributed voi e pa kets and Pareto-distributed data pa kets, and study the e e t of the omposition of the mix and the shape parameter of Pareto distribution on the system performan e. Then we derive analyti al expressions for the omposite performan e metri with an aim to obtain the optimal values of expiration timers at whi h the MAC states should be swit hed su h that the system performan e is maximized. Sin e a losed form solution ould not be obtained due to the trans endental nature of the expressions, simulation experiments are ondu ted to on rm the analysis.

Dual Degree Dissertation Efficient Media Access Control (MAC) Layer Design for Multi-Class CDMA Networks
Heterogeneity of telecommunications platform and customization of multimedia services are two predominant features of the third generation wireless cellular networks. In such a scenario, where the access requirements of multimedia customers and network conditions change from session to session, the existence of fair and efficient algorithms for admission control and scheduling which exploit the...
متن کاملAccess Control for QoS Provisioning in Integrated Voice/Data CDMA Systems
Third generation (3G) wireless systems stipulate simultaneous support of diverse services ranging from voice to several forms of data. The quality of service (QoS) guarantees needed by the spectrum of services offered in a wireless integrated system can be provided by employing access control protocols. Access control for efficient radio resource management requires studying its interaction wit...
متن کاملImpacts of data call characteristics on multi-service CDMA system capacity
The capacity of multi-service Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems has been extensively studied in the literature. However, few studies address the fundamental issue of how the stochastic properties of non-Poisson data traffic affect the system capacity. This paper studies a CDMA system supporting voice and data traffic. Results show that increased variability in the data call arrival p...
متن کاملAnalysis of Delay Distribution of Data call in CDMA Systems Supporting Voice and Delay-tolerant Data Calls
In this aper, we present a procedure to analyze the delay distribution of data traffic in CDMA systems supporting voice and delay-tolerant data services with a finite buffer. The queueing method using a buffer for a delay-tolerant traffic can be used to improve the system utilization or the availability of system resources. Under the first-come and first-serve (FCFS) service discipline, we pres...
متن کاملUtility optimization and fairness guarantees for multimedia traffic in the downlink of DS-CDMA systems
Radio resource control is one of the key technologies for providing quality-of-service (QoS) in wireless communication systems, where power and data rate are schedulable resources. In this paper, we propose a utility-based resource control scheme for multimedia traffic in the downlink of DS-CDMA systems. The goal is to achieve the social optimal resource utilization. Fairness is guaranteed by a...
